Yardbirds Use Big Innings to Defeat Whiptails

July 1 2017 The High Desert Yardbirds defeated the California City Whiptails 14-5, scoring in five innings and pulling away with a six-run third and a three-run seventh. High Desert also scored three times in the first and twice in the fifth, while California City’s offense produced one run in the second and four in the fourth.

Shane Brown led the Yardbirds with four hits in five at-bats, including a home run, three runs and four RBI. Dylan Kester added two hits, two runs and two RBI, while J. Tasis drove in two runs. High Desert finished with 13 hits and 13 RBI. California City collected 17 hits, led by Austin Marcellus with three hits and an RBI; Manny Colon, Robert De La Hoz, Steven Longo and S. Stetson each had two hits.

Gregory Turner earned the win for High Desert after allowing five runs, three earned, on 14 hits in six innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. Evan Hilton worked two scoreless innings and Avery Brandon added a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts. California City starter Jesus Roman took the loss after surrendering nine runs on five hits in two innings, while Darrell Allen allowed two earned runs over three innings.
